I am very proud of all the Broadway shows and tours I have managed over almost 40 years in the business, but I have to say that my proudest accomplishment was leading my Local through the COVID-19 shutdown of our industry.  I was elected in December of 2019 and three months later our membership, like so many others in IATSE, found themselves facing an extraordinary situation. I was still learning the job, but I knew one thing: I was determined that our membership remain as well informed as possible of what was enfolding from the outset of the shutdown through the return to work. Over the years I have acquired strength by \u201c\u2026feeling the fear and doing it anyway.\u201d I was thrown into scenarios like single motherhood that weren\u2019t in my original plan and I had to find the help I needed to make that work. I had to accept the fact that I was judged differently than my male counterparts and would be paid less even though I had more experience and education. \u201cHead of household\u201d was a term applied to women only recently, a handy excuse to pay less in the past. So, I worked two and sometimes three jobs. All of this showed me that I was capable, no matter the task. Now, we can use legislative avenues to fight for pay equity. How has it shaped your career? Being a member of the union behind entertainment is all about having career safety, certain protection, and advocating for the advancement of workers\u2019 rights. Having the ability through my Local to participate in collective bargaining with the government or with private groups and institutions that control our wages and conditions makes all the difference in my work. Things aren\u2019t perfect and set lighting technicians are still overworked and underpaid, but I am grateful to have much better working conditions than when I was a barista right before this job. So, all in all, being a part of a group of organized workers with representation has changed a lot for my economic status and health; I\u2019m making a living wage and I am able to access and afford to see a doctor now.
